Softball Extends Win Streak To Nine With Sweep Over Sage

GENESEO, NY: The SUNY Geneseo softball team secured its fourth consecutive sweep with a doubleheader win over Russell Sage on Monday, extending its winning streak to nine games. The Knights won 6-2 in game one and 7-6 in game two. With the sweep, Geneseo improves to 26-9 overall and 17-3 in conference play. Molly Griffin hit a two-run home run in the opener to mark her eighth of the season and become just the eighth player since 1999 to reach the program's single season home run leader board.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Geneseo came out of the gate in control, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Ray Schumacher sparked the surge with an RBI single up the middle to score Brooke Fraas, and Griffin followed with a two-run blast. The Knights added two more runs in the second before Sage got one back in the third to make it 5-1.
  • The Gators added a run in the fifth on an RBI double and Geneseo responded in the sixth with another RBI single from Schumacher. Sage could only manage one hit in the top of the seventh, and it wasn't enough as Geneseo secured a 6-2 victory in game one.
  • Geneseo opened the second game in similar fashion, scoring three runs in the first inning. Gabriella Petroski highlighted the frame with a two-RBI single to right. Sage got one on the board in the second, and both teams were held scoreless over the next two innings.
  • The Gators came alive in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on two hits to take a 5-3 lead. Geneseo answered with a run of its own in the bottom half on an RBI single up the middle from Lauren Babich. Both teams added a run in the sixth, giving Sage a 6-5 lead heading into the seventh.
  • Geneseo made a late push in the seventh, scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game at six and force extras. The Knights took a 7-6 win in the eighth after Emily Sylvanus reached on a fielding error that scored Gabreilla Smith.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Geneseo continues to stay undefeated at home with a 12-0 record.
  • Schumacher, Fraas and Griffin all went 2-for-3 in game two with a combined four RBIs and five runs scored.
  • Fraas stole a season-high four bases in game one.
  • Petroski earned the win on the rubber in both games, improving to 14-3 on the season.
WHAT'S NEXT:
The Knights will face Ithaca tomorrow at Vic Raschi field starting at 3 P.M. Geneseo will then close out the Empire 8 regular season at Houghton on Thursday, where they can clinch the No. 1 seed for the postseason with one win, and sole possession of the regular season title with a sweep.
