The following information should be used as a guide for families of SUNY Geneseo student-athletes.
NCAA Eligibility
- Student athletes are required to complete all required NCAA forms and attend a scheduled eligibility meeting prior to the start of the season. If your student-athlete is under the age of 18, information will be emailed for your authorization allowing your student-athlete to participate.
Health Insurance
- The NCAA requires all student-athletes to carry or be covered by health insurance in order to participate in intercollegiate athletics. If an intercollegiate sports accident/injury occurs requiring a medical specialist, the student’s own health insurance provides the primary insurance coverage. SUNY Geneseo does carry a secondary insurance policy on all studentathletes, but that insurance does not take effect until a $2000 deductible has been met by the student-athletes personal health insurance policy.
- Athletic training services offered on campus, including rehabilitation, are provided to all student-athletes at no cost. However, charges may be incurred for tests, x-rays/MRIs, medications, outside consultations and hospitalizations.
Injuries/Return to Play
- The certified athletic trainers, and when needed the College and/or team physician, will determine the playing status of any SUNY Geneseo student-athlete after an injury. If a physician has assisted with the care of an athlete that physician, in conjunction with the certified athletic trainers, will determine when the student-athlete may return to full sports participation. The College physician has the final decision on the participation status of a student-athlete.
- If a student-athlete is injured during a game, they should report to the athletic trainer immediately. The athletic trainer will determine if the student-athlete can continue to play, or if immediate treatment is needed. The decision of the athletic trainer is final.
- After the contest, the student-athlete will be instructed by the athletic trainer for further evaluation and/or treatment. They will be given instructions on how to manage their injury and when to next report to the athletic training staff
Travel Policies
- The majority of SUNY Geneseo’s intercollegiate teams will travel to competition and return from competition on a charter bus. In some cases, student-athletes may travel in a 15-passenger van, which will be driven by a certified driver
- Student-athletes that travel with the team to the competition are required to return with the team to campus. However, if a student-athlete cannot return to campus with the team, they can ONLY leave the competition with a parent/guardian. Prior authorization by the head coach and Athletic Director is required.
Dear Families of Geneseo Student-Athletes
With the start of the 2023-24 academic year underway, we have been rejuvenated by the return of our Geneseo student-athletes. The 2022-23 will be a hard act to follow, but we are excited for the challenge. Last year was one of the most successful for the Knights, earning their 7th SUNYAC Commissioner’s Cup and 12 team championships. In addition to their competitive excellence, Geneseo student-athletes posted a combined GPA well over 3.0 (for at least the 20th consecutive semester) and devoted over 500 hours of community service. For so many reasons, the Athletic program continues to be a source of pride for our campus and community.
As a new member of the Geneseo family, I would like to share my vision for the Athletic Department. In short, our goal is to create an environment in which all student-athletes thrive and succeed. Through their Geneseo experience, each student-athlete will discover their passions and dreams while developing the skills and character to achieve them. At the end of their collegiate careers, every Knight will graduate, prepared to create a fruitful career and fulfilling life.
It is important to remember that part of the Geneseo education requires student-athletes to develop the skills to communicate and advocate for themselves. While we are deeply grateful for the financial and emotional support that families provide, it is important that you give your student-athlete space to navigate these new challenges without your direct assistance. If your student-athlete has team-related concerns, please encourage them to contact their coach directly. If they continue to have concerns, they can talk with me or other members of the Athletic Leadership team. Family, friends, and other supporters should not contact coaches on behalf of their student-athlete. Coaches and administrators will not entertain conversations related to playing time, strategy, or other related topics.
We know that it takes more than just Athletics to create an exceptional, collegiate experience. At SUNY Geneseo, there are layers of support for every student-athlete at Geneseo, ranging from Health and Wellness, to academic, and NCAA compliance questions. Those resources have been shared with your student-athlete at the beginning of the academic year and are always available on the
ATHLETIC and
INSTITUTIONAL websites.
SUNY Geneseo has a long, proud tradition of athletic and academic excellence. We are so excited by the promise of the new year, for all its energy and potential. We look forward to seeing the stands and sidelines filled with friends, family, and alums. Please join us as we show how special the NCAA Division III experience is and how proud we are to wear the Blue and White.
Go Knights!Â
