Softball Splits On Day Two Of Empire 8 Tournament, Advances To Saturday Against St. John Fisher at 11 A.M.

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team went 1-1 on day two of the Empire 8 tournament, defeating Nazareth in the first game of the day 6-2 to eliminate the Golden Flyers, then fell in the last game of the day against Alfred, 5-3. The Knights move to 30-10 on the season and remain alive in the tournament, facing No. 2 St. John Fisher on Saturday at 11 a.m., with the winner set to take on Alfred at 1:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Geneseo got off to a hot start in against Nazareth, jumping ahead 1-0 in the top of the first as Brooke Fraas drew a walk and stole second, followed by a single from Emily Sylvanus and an RBI from Lauren Babich.
  • The Golden Flyers answered back with a home run in the bottom of the second, but the Knights regained the lead in the fourth with Sylvanus scoring a run and then Babich driving in Ray Schumacher with a double in the gap to make it 3-1.
  • Geneseo tacked on another run in the top of the fifth, with Nevaeh Ross putting Gabriella Smith on third with a double, then Lauren Bieniek drove Smith in with a sacrifice fly. Molly Griffin highlighted the offensive showing on the day with a two-run home run in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 6-1. 
  • Nazareth got one run back, but couldn't mount a comeback and ultimately fell 6-2 for their second loss of the tournament.
  • The Saxons got on the board in the top of the first with a trip to the championship game on the line, but the Knights limited the damage to just one run by throwing out a runner at home on a ground ball to first base.
  • Fraas quickly tied the game up in the second inning with a two-out RBI single, but Alfred opened up the game in the third inning with four runs.
  • Geneseo got one run back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Bella Nadzan, then Nevaeh Ross scored in the sixth inning to make it 5-3, but the Knights couldn't complete the comeback.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Molly Griffin tied the program record for single-season home runs in the game with her 10th of the season against Nazareth.
  • Gabriella Petroski earned the win in game one, throwing all seven innings and only allowing one earned run.
  • The Knights surpassed the 30-win mark for the first time since the 2022 season, and the seventh time in program history.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Geneseo will take on St. John Fisher in an elimination game at 11 a.m. at Vic Raschi Field, with the winner facing Alfred at 1:30 p.m.
