Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo men's lacrosse team fell just short in their hopes to win the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship on Saturday afternoon as they fell to Cortland 7-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Knights and Red Dragons were locked in a defensive battle from the start as neither team could find the back of the net until the final two minutes of the first quarter. Cortland struck first, but Geneseo bounced back as Sean Byrne tied it at 1-1 with 34 seconds on the clock.
Byrne's goal gave the Knights offense momentum and they were able to carry that into the second quarter, scoring the first two goals and taking a 3-1 advantage. The Red Dragons were able to get one back before halftime though and make it a one-goal game.
Cortland's offense found their rhythm in the third quarter, scoring five goals and reaching a three-goal lead heading to the final 15 minutes.
In the fourth quarter, senior attacker Kevin Cook tallied a pair of assists to Cole Bollin and Byrne and the Knights cut the lead to 7-6 with six minutes remaining. Unfortunately, Geneseo couldn't find the equalizer and ultimately fell 7-6.
