Softball Stays Unbeaten In Tournament With Two Come-From Behind Victories

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo Softball team trailed in both of its games on Friday, but earned a pair of come-from-behind victories to improve to 3-0 in SUNYAC Tournament play and advance to the conference championship round on Saturday. 

GAME 1 - GENESEO 9, Oneonta 3

  • First-year Kaitlyn Schmitz smacked a first-pitch fastball over the left-center field fence to put the Knights ahead, 1-0, in the bottom of the first inning. 
  • Oneonta tied the game with a run in the third inning and then pulled ahead, 3-1, with a pair of runs in the fourth. 
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Knights tied the game as Audrey Minton ripped an RBI double and Samantha Martz drove in a run four batters later. 
  • In the sixth, Martz put the Knights ahead with an RBI single, spurring a six-run rally to make it 9-3. Lauren Kersch entered in the seventh to close down the Red Dragons as the Knights earned the victory.

GAME 2 - GENESEO 6, Cortland 4

  • Cortland opened up a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second inning, but the Knights battled back to tie when Katherine Hayes hit a two-run double down the right field line in the bottom of the second. 
  • Audrey Minton put the Knights ahead, 3-2, with an RBI single in the third inning but Cortland regained the lead with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth. 
  • Hannah Olejniczak and Olivia Fazio combined for a heady double-steal, allowing Olejniczak to steal home to tie the game 4-4 in the fifth. 
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Martz singled and Schwartz walked to set the table for Schmitz who lined a triple into the right field corner, putting Geneseo ahead, 6-4. 
  • Lauren Kersch completed the game for her 14th pitching victory of the season as the Knights advanced to the SUNYAC Championship round. 

QUICK FACTS 

  • Geneseo earned its fourth-consecutive SUNYAC Championship appearance. The Knights seek their second-consecutive conference crown and third in four seasons. 
  • Schmitz finished 5-for-7 with a home run, a triple, a double, two singles, five RBI and three runs scored. Minton went 4-for-7 with three RBI while Martz went 5-for-5 across the two games combined. 
  • Elizabeth Eberhardt went six innings allowing just three earned runs for the pitching victory in game one before Kersch went the distance in game two, allowing four runs (three earned) and ringing up five strikeouts.

WHAT'S NEXT? 

Geneseo improves to 33-4 overall this season and will face the winner of New Paltz and Cortland (11:00 a.m. Saturday) in the SUNYAC Championship.
