Softball Blanks Bombers For Non-Conference Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore pitcher Lauren Kersch and junior pitcher Elizabeth Eberhardt each posted a complete-game shutout as the Knights blanked visiting Ithaca, 1-0 and 2-0, to earn a doubleheader sweep against one of the region's best.

GAME ONE - GENESEO 1, Ithaca 0

  • Kersch pitched an absolute gem, allowing just two hits and one walk while ringing up seven strikeouts.
  • Kersch allowed just one runner to reach scoring position throughout the entire game, after giving up a leadoff double in the seventh inning. She battled back to record three-straight outs, stranding the tying run on third base to end the game.
  • Senior Taylor Riccardi led off the bottom of the second inning with a double to right-center and Audrey Minton brought her home with a double to center to make it 1-0. It was the only offense Kersch needed as the Knights closed out the victory.

GAME TWO - GENESEO 2, Ithaca 0

  • Elizabeth Eberhardt scattered three hits, allowed one walk and rung up a career-high 10 strikeouts as she shutout the Bombers in game two.
  • Ithaca threatened in the top of second inning, capitalizing on the Knights' lone defensive miscue of the game, but Eberhardt forced two groundouts to end the inning and strand the runners.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Rebecca Schwartz and first-year Kaitlyn Schmitz led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Riccardi laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over and Minton ripped a single to plate both Knights, giving the team a 2-0 lead.
  • Eberhardt retired the last 15 batters she faced in order to shut down any hopes of a Bomber comeback.

QUICK FACTS

  • The Knights earned their 11th and 12th shutouts of the season, blanking an opponent in both legs of a doubleheader for the second time this year.
  • Kersch recorded her fourth complete-game shutout of the season and the sixth of her career while Eberhardt tallied her fourth complete-game shutout of the season as well.
  • Audrey Minton recorded two of the Knights' seven hits in the two games combined, driving in all three RBI. Rebecca Schwartz finished 2-for-3 with a run scored in game two.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Knights (27-3, 13-1 SUNYAC) will not play against Rochester on Wednesday, with that doubleheader cancelled due to weather. The squad will finish the regular season with a trip to Cortland for a twinbill on Friday and another conference doubleheader at Oswego on Saturday.
