Softball Secures Playoff Spot With Sweep of Buffalo State

GENESEO, N.Y. - Junior Leah VanDerwarker recorded five hits across two games as the Knights swept State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival Buffalo State on Friday afternoon at Vic Raschi Field. 

GAME 1 - GENESEO 4, Buffalo St. 0 

  • Sophomore pitcher Lauren Kersch retired the first 17 batters she faced, holding a perfect game for 5.2 innings before the Bengals earned their first hit of the game. Kersch faced just 24 batters, three over the minimum, as she earned her second-consecutive complete-game shutout. 
  • The Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning as first-year Kaitlyn Schmitz drove in one with an RBI groundout and senior Taylor Riccardi added a sacrifice fly, making it 2-0. 
  • Junior Audrey Minton added an RBI single in the third inning and VanDerwarker drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the fourth to make it 4-0. 

GAME 2 - GENESEO 11, Buffalo St. 3 

  • The Bengals struck first with an RBI single in the top of the first inning, but Geneseo responded as VanDerwarker scored on a passed ball to tie the game, 1-1. 
  • In the second inning, VanDerwarker blooped an RBI single over first base to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. 
  • Buffalo State regained the lead with two runs in the third, but the Knights jumped back ahead after junior Olivia Fazio ripped an tw0-run double and junior Samantha Martz earned an RBI on a fielder's choice. VanDerwarker added a two-run double to give Geneseo a 7-3 lead after the third inning. 
  • Fazio singled in a run and stole home in the fourth to make it 9-3. In the sixth, Minton and Fazio each tallied RBI singles to walk off with an eight-run victory. 
  • Elizabeth Eberhardt earned the pitching victory, tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. 

QUICK FACTS 

  • VanDerwarker finished 5-for-7 with four RBI and two runs scored while Fazio went 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs in game two. 
  • Eberhardt improved her pitching record to 4-1, reducing her ERA to 0.59 in 35.1 innings pitched. Eberhardt has not allowed a run since March 30, pitching 16.0 consecutive scoreless innings. 
  • Kersch improved her season ERA to 0.69 and has now tossed 15.0 consecutive scoreless innings. The Knights' pitching staff ranks fifth in NCAA Division III with a 1.21 ERA over 26 games this season. 
  • The Knights clinched a SUNYAC Tournament appearance with the sweep, improving to 11-1 in conference play. 

WHAT'S NEXT? 

Geneseo (23-3, 11-1 SUNYAC) will host Fredonia on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Knights will celebrate the Class of 2022 in a pre-game ceremony.
