Box Score 2 GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo Softball team overcame the season's largest deficit to earn a victory in game one as they split a doubleheader with Oneonta on Friday afternoon at Raschi Field.
GAME ONE - GENESEO 10, Oneonta 8
- The Knights fell behind early as Oneonta plated three runs in the first and three more in the third to take a 6-0 lead.
- First-year Kaitlyn Schmitz ripped a two-run double in the bottom of the third, scoring Leah VanDerwarker and Samantha Martz to cut the Red Dragons' advantage to 6-2.
- Oneonta scored two more in the fourth to regain a six-run lead, 8-2, but Schmitz came through again in the bottom of the frame with a two-run single, making it 8-4.
- In the fifth, sophomore Lauren Gulick lifted a sacrifice fly to drive in Audrey Minton, cutting the lead to three runs.
- In the sixth, Taylor Riccardi hit an RBI single through the right side and Katherine Hayes added an RBI single through the left side to make it 8-7. With the bases loaded, Samantha Martz skied a pitch to right field. The wind blew the ball back in toward the infield and it landed safely as a double, scoring three Knights to give Geneseo a 10-8 lead.
- Lauren Kersch got the final three outs to earn the save, despite making the start. Mattie Klein earned the pitchign victory, tossing 3.1 innings of relief.
GAME TWO - Oneonta 4, GENESEO 2
- Oneonta powered its way to a four-run lead, smacking a pair of two-run home runs in the third inning.
- Elizabeth Eberhardt provided 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, shutting down the Red Dragon bats to keep the Knights within striking distance from the circle.
- Geneseo cut the lead in half in the fifth inning when Leah VanDerwarker lifted an RBI single to left field and Kaitlyn Schmitz drove her in with an RBI double.
- The Knights threatened to tie the game in the sixth inning, putting two runners on with just one out, but couldn't bring the tying run home. The squad went down in order in the seventh, as Oneonta forced the split.
QUICK FACTS
- The Knights faced their largest deficit of the season in game one, trailing by six runs. The Red Dragons' eight runs were the most allowed by Geneseo in a single game this season.
- Geneseo's 13-game winning streak was snapped in game two, leaving it as fourth-longest winning streak in program history and the team's longest since 2015.
- Schmitz, VanDerwarker and Martz each finished with three hits across the two games while Schmitz recorded a team-high five RBI and Martz added two RBI and three runs scored.
