Softball Sweeps Alfred with Pair of One-Run Wins

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior utility Leah VanDerwarker finished with a team-high five hits as the Knights swept visiting Alfred in a pair of one-run victories, defeating the Saxons, 7-6, in 10 innings in game one and 1-0 in game two. 

GAME ONE - Geneseo 7, Alfred 6 (10 inn.)

  • Geneseo fell behind, 1-0, in the first inning as the Saxons scored on a Geneseo error. The Knights leveled the score in the bottom of the frame when senior infielder Taylor Riccardi singled in first-year outfielder Kaitlyn Schmitz
  • Alfred jumped ahead, 2-1, with a solo home run in the second and added another run on an error in the fourth to take a 3-1 advantage. 
  • Junior infielder Audrey Minton blasted a two-run home run to tie the game before VanDerwarker drove in two more with a double to make it 5-3 after the fifth inning. 
  • Alfred tied the game with two runs in the sixth to force extra innings, and took the lead with a run in the 10th. In the bottom of the 10th inning, VanDerwarker drove in first-year Hannah Olejniczak with a single to tie the game before sophomore Rebecca Schwartz laced a walk-off RBI double to right field to give the Knights a 7-6 victory.

GAME TWO - Geneseo 1, Alfred 0 

  • Sophomore pitcher Lauren Kersch surrendered just three hits and rung up four strikeouts to silence the Alfred bats, shutting out the Saxons for the first time this season. 
  • Schmitz provided the Knights' only offense, singling in the third inning to plate junior outfielder Samantha Martz for the lone run of the contest.

QUICK FACTS 

  • VanDerwarker finished a combined 5-for-7 from the plate, with three RBI and a run scored. 
  • Junior infielder Olivia Fazio went 3-for-4, including a 2-for-2 effort in game two. 
  • The Knights pitching staff combined to allow just one earned run over the two games combined. Woodard improved to 2-1 on the season while Kersch moved to 4-0. 
  • Senior catcher Katherine Hayes was hit by a pitch three times in game one, the most in a single game in program history.

Geneseo (10-2) will begin SUNYAC play on Saturday when they travel to Brockport to face the Golden Eagles in a doubleheader at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
