Softball Closes Season at NCAA Regional

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ERIE, Pa. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team was eliminated from the NCAA Regional on Saturday afternoon, falling to Rochester, 5-2, and York (Pa.), 2-0, in consecutive games.

GAME 1 - ROCHESTER 5, GENESEO 2

  • Rochester took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with an RBI single and added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend the advantage to 5-0.
  • The Knights got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, when first-year pinch-hitter Lauren Kersch drove home first-year Rebecca Schwartz with a single up the middle.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore infielder Leah VanDerwarker scored on a Rochester error to cut further into the lead, 5-2.
  • Sophomore pitcher Mattie Woodard twirled 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to keep the Knights within three runs, but the Geneseo offense could not generate enough runs to complete the comeback.

GAME 2 - YORK (PA.) 2, GENESEO 0

  • First-year infielder Rebecca Schwartz and sophomore infielder Anna Johnston each singled, providing the Knights' only two hits of the ballgame.
  • Geneseo was unable to advance a runner into scoring position at any point in the game as the York defense kept the bats quiet.
  • The Spartans took the lead in the third inning, capitalizing on a Geneseo fielding error to move ahead, 1-0. York scored again in the bottom of sixth to increase their lead before the Knights went quietly in the seventh.

QUICK FACTS

  • Geneseo finished the season with a 17-10 record and won its second SUNYAC title in the past three seasons, its third in program history.
  • The Knights graduate five seniors: Samantha Seeger, Rachel Mihlstin, Nicole Schwartz, Melissa Triolo and Angela Van Pelt
  • The Geneseo seniors capped their careers with two SUNYAC Championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each year it was played, the only Geneseo graduating class to accomplish either feat.
