Softball Earns Sweep of Lakers In SUNYAC Opener

OSWEGO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior infielder Taylor Riccardi tallied three hits and two RBI as the Knights rolled to a pair of victories over host Oswego, defeating the Lakers, 9-1, in game one and earning a 5-0 victory in game two in the squad's State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener on Friday. 

GAME 1 - Geneseo 9, Oswego 1 

  • Geneseo jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore infielder Audrey Minton ripped an RBI single to center field and came around to score on a passed ball. The Knights added two more runs in the second inning, capitalizing on a pair of Oswego errors to make it 4-0. 
  • The Lakers scored a run in the bottom of the second, but Geneseo extended its lead with three runs in the third inning. The Knights added two more runs in the top of the fifth as senior infielder Melissa Triolo lined an RBI triple to the right-field corner and came home to score on a single to left by senior outfielder Angela Van Pelt
  • Senior pitcher Nicole Schwartz allowed just one run on four hits while ringing up a career-high eight strikeouts to earn the victory from the rubber. 

GAME 2 - Geneseo 5, Oswego 0 

  • First-year pitcher Lauren Kersch twirled a one-hit shutout, allowing just one walk while recording four strikeouts to lead the Knights to victory. Kersch provided her own run support, singling home a run in the fourth inning to make it 1-0. 
  • Junior catcher Katherine Hayes and Riccardi each recorded an RBI in the fifth inning to extend the Geneseo lead to 3-0. 
  • In the seventh inning, Hayes drove home another run with an RBI double and Riccardi added a second RBI with a single up the middle to make it 5-0. 

QUICK FACTS 

  • Geneseo scored nine runs on just five hits in game one, taking advantage of three Oswego errors. Six of the Knights' nine runs were unearned.
  • The Knights have won 16 out of 17 games against the conference-rival Lakers, including each of the last five meetings. 

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Knights return to action on Saturday, April 10 as they host Fredonia in another conference doubleheader, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
