Box Score ALTOONA, P.A. – The SUNY Geneseo women's basketball team began its 2021-22 season with a bang as they defeated Mt. Aloysius 76-47 in the opening round of the Mountain Valley Tip Off Classic at Penn St. Altoona.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights got off to a shaky start in the season opener as the trailed 5-0 four minutes into the action. Sophomore forward Kerry Dennin finally broke the scoring drought with a layup off a pass from junior forward Saige Benedict.
- Geneseo's defense shut out the Mounties offense for nearly 10-straight minutes between the first and second quarter, which allowed the Knights to take an 11-5 lead early in the second period.
- The offense came alive in the second quarter for the Knights as they scored 25 points and took a commanding 35-16 advantage into halftime.
- Geneseo kept their momentum rolling in the second half and put away any thoughts of a comeback as they dropped 27 points in the third quarter to help seal their season-opening victory.
QUICK FACTS
- Four Knights reached double digit points, with Dennin leading the way at 14 points, junior forward Lauren Romito and junior guard Hannah Stockman each recorded 11, while sophomore guard Kiley Snow chipped in 10 points off the bench.
- Benedict led the rebounding effort for Geneseo with 10 total, four offensive and six defensive.
- The Knights have now won their season-opener for five-consecutive seasons.
