Softball Falls to Cortland, 7-3, to Force One-Game Playoff For SUNYAC Championship

Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior outfielder Danni Napoli launched a two-run home run in the seventh, but the Knights comeback bid fell short as they dropped their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament contest to host Cortland, 7-3, on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Junior pitcher Ashlyn Kersch navigated through four scoreless innings, but the Red Dragons strung together six hits and capitalized on a Geneseo error in the fifth inning to plate six runs and take a 6-0 lead.
  • The Red Dragons added a run in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-0 lead.
  • In the seventh, Geneseo mounted a comeback as Kersch led off with a single before Napoli belted a long home run to left-center, her seventh of the season, to cut into the lead. Junior outfielder Hannah Elmer followed with a double and junior infielder Abbey Whitney hit a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Senior pinch-hitter Jasmine Petrishin drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, but the Knights could draw no closer, falling to the host Dragons.

QUICK FACTS

  • Geneseo has hit 23 home runs this season, nearly doubling their home run total from last season (14), including a team-high seven each by Napoli and Elmer.
  • Geneseo allowed more than four runs for the first time in this year's SUNYAC Tournament, and just the sixth time this season.
  • The Knights and Red Dragons played through last year's SUNYAC Tournament the same way, with the two teams meeting in the "if-necessary" game on the final day of the tournament last season. Geneseo won last year's SUNYAC Championship with a 5-1 victory.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Geneseo and Cortland will square off on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. The winner will be crowned SUNYAC Champions.
