Softball Sweeps Nazareth in 2019 Home Opener

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior catcher Hannah Elmer hit a walk-off home-run while sophomore pitcher Nicole Schwartz and senior pitcher Jasmine Petrishin held Nazareth to just eight hits as the Knights earned a pair of non-conference wins against the Golden Flyers on Wednesday.

GAME 1 - GENESEO 1, NAZARETH 0

  • The Geneseo offense compiled 11 hits including a double by sophomore pitcher Nicole Schwartz in the second inning, but could not manufacture a run over the first six innings, stranding 13 baserunners.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, Elmer blasted a solo shot over the left field fence to walk off with the 1-0 victory.
  • Schwartz pitched all seven innings allowing four hits and recording three strikeouts to earn the win.

GAME 2 - GENESEO 9, NAZARETH 1 (6 inn.)

  • Senior pitcher Jasmine Petrishin struck out three batters, allowing just four hits over seven innings.
  • Sophomore outfielder Rachel Mihlstin hit an RBI triple plating first-year catcher Katherine Hayes and scored on an error to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
  • The Knights gained a 4-0 lead in the third inning after sophomore outfielder Angela Van Pelt and senior outfielder Danni Napoli scored on a single by first-year infielder Taylor Riccardi and a sacrifice fly by Hayes, respectively.
  • Junior infielder Brooke Wolff hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth while Riccardi and Petrishin scored in the fifth to further Geneseo's lead to seven runs.
  • Nazareth scored a run in the top of the sixth inning, but Napoli doubled home a run and scored on a error in the bottom of the frame to close the game at 9-1.

QUICK FACTS

  • Senior outfielder Alyssa Persich went 3-for-4 in game one while Napoli and Mihlstin each went 2-for-3 in game two.
  • Elmer leads the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) with 22 RBI and is tied for first with four home runs.

  • Schwartz improved to 3-1, reducing her ERA to 1.56 as the Knights recorded their sixth shutout of the season.
