Men's Lacrosse Clinches Postseason Berth With 12-5 Win Over Brockport

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior attackman Dillon Rogers totaled two goals and two assists while sophomore midfielder James Pratt added two goals and an assist to lead the Knights to a 12-5 victory over visiting Brockport, Wednesday, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's lacrosse action. 

Geneseo (6-9, 3-2 SUNYAC) clinched a berth in the 2019 SUNYAC Tournament and will face an opponent to be determined the semifinals on Wednesday, May 1 at 4:00 p.m. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Geneseo opened a 4-0 lead after the first quarter. Sophomore midfielder Cameron Chiodo put the Knights on the board at the 7:40 mark before Rogers scored in transition off a feed from first-year attackman Kevin Cook at 3:41. Sophomore midfielder Jake Bucci scored on a 10-yard rip at 1:31 before Cook scored on a close-range fake 10 seconds later. 
  • Brockport got on the board three minutes into the second quarter, but Geneseo out-scored the Golden Eagles, 5-1, to build a 9-2 halftime lead. Pratt scored on a 12-yard shot from the top of the zone at 11:29 and sophomore attackman Connor Griffin later tallied back-to-back goals in less than a minute, including off a tight pass through traffic by Pratt at 5:21. Pratt tacked on a goal of his own at the 4:01 mark for the five-goal edge after 30 minutes of play. 
  • Junior attackman Matt Malone and first-year midfielder Jake Steffen tallied during a two-minute stretch to give the Knights an 11-2 edge with 10:56 left in the third quarter. 
  • Brockport scored the next three goals into the fourth quarter to pull within six, 11-5, with 5:36 left in the game, but a Geneseo goal by first-year midfielder Sean Byrne with 3:34 to play was the final goal of the game. 

GAME NOTES 

  • Eight Knights finished with at least one goal, while seven notched at least one assist. 
  • Geneseo finished the game with a 37-27 shooting advantage as well as a 37-32 edge in ground balls. 
  • First-year midfielder Ryan Lee won 12-of-18 face-offs while tying with senior defenseman Jack Crowley with a team-high six ground balls. 
  • Junior goalie Tyler Wetzel made 10 saves to earn the victory between the pipes. 
  • Geneseo qualified for the SUNYAC Tournament for the second time in three years after playing in the 2017 postseason following a five-year hiatus. 

WHAT'S NEXT 

Geneseo closes the regular season this Saturday (Apr. 27) with a 12:00 p.m. face-off at Potsdam.
