Softball Earns Two Close Wins Over Local Rival RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo softball team triumphed behind a pair of strong pitching efforts from seniors Alyssa Persich and Jasmine Petrishin as the Knights earned a pair of non-conference victories over host RIT, defeating the Tigers, 3-1 and 2-0, on Wednesday evening.

GAME ONE – Geneseo 3, RIT 1

  • Senior outfielder Alyssa Persich was called upon to make her first appearance of the year on the rubber. She went the distance, allowing just one earned run on six hits while recording nine strikeouts.
  • In the fourth inning, the Knights took a 1-0 lead when sophomore outfielder Angela Van Pelt drove in Koutsogiannis with a fielder's choice.
  • Geneseo added single runs in the sixth and seventh inning to advance the lead to 3-0 before the Tigers scored one in the bottom of the seventh. RIT had the tying run at the plate, but Persich forced a popout to end the game and earn the victory. 

GAME TWO – Geneseo 2, RIT 0

  • First-year catcher Katherine Hayes opened the scoring with a solo home run over the left-field fence in the third inning.
  • The Knights added an insurance run in the sixth inning when first-year infielder Phoebe Elardo led off with a sharp single up the middle and came around to score when senior pitcher Jasmine Petrishin ripped a single to right field, making it 2-0.
  • Petrishin tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering four hits and recording a pair of strikeouts.

QUICK FACTS

  • The Knights recorded their 10th shutout of the season in game two and have allowed just three runs in their last five games combined while outscoring their opponents 14-3.
  • Persich made just her sixth career appearance as a pitcher and her first since April 24, 2017. She earned her first collegiate win on the rubber, twirling a career-high nine strikeouts.
  • Hayes' home run was the first hit of her college career as she became the eighth different Knight with a home run this season.

The Knights will host Brockport in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 with game times scheduled for 12 and 2 p.m.
