Softball Splits Pair of Pitchers' Duels with New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior pitcher Taylor Moore and junior pitcher Ashlyn Kersch each hurled their way through solid outings, but the Knights split with New Paltz in their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener on Friday, falling, 2-0, in game one before defeating the Hawks, 4-0, in game two.

GAME ONE – New Paltz 2, Geneseo 0

  • Moore threw four innings allowing just one earned run on five hits, but received no run support as the Knights were no-hit. Senior pitcher Jasmine Petrishin added a pair of shutout innings in relief.
  • The Hawks capitalized on a Geneseo error, scoring an unearned run in the second inning, and added another run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Knights advanced runners to scoring position in the first and second innings, but were unable to drive in any runs.

GAME TWO – Geneseo 4, New Paltz 0

  • Kersch tossed a complete-game shutout in game two, scattering five hits and recording five strikeouts to earn her fifth win of the season.
  • The Knights scored a pair of runs in the second inning, using three walks and two New Paltz errors to take the lead.
  • Geneseo added two more runs in the third, increasing their lead to 4-0. Senior outfielder Danni Napoli led off the inning with a single and came home to score when junior outfielder Hannah Elmer drove a ball to right field that was misplayed, allowing Napoli to score from first. Elmer scored on an RBI single by Kersch later in the inning.

QUICK FACTS

  • Kersch and first-year infielder Taylor Riccardi each recorded an RBI in game two, while Elmer scored two runs and Napoli and senior catcher Taylor Fedor each scored one run.
  • The Knights were held without an extra-base hit in both games, and recorded just five hits combined.
  • Kersch reduced her team-low ERA to 1.19, her second and the Knights' fifth shutout of the season.

The Knights (11-5, 1-1 SUNYAC) will travel to Hudson Valley Community College in Troy N.Y. to face Oneonta in another conference doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
