Napoli Ties Home Run Record as Softball Sweeps Clarkson, Bowdoin

CLERMONT, Fla. - SUNY Geneseo senior outfielder Danni Napoli tied the program record for career home runs with a two-run shot in game two as the Knights earned a pair of victories in Florida on Thursday, defeating Clarkson, 7-3, and Bowdoin, 9-4.

GAME ONE - Geneseo 7, Clarkson 3 

  • Geneseo opened the game with a run as senior outfielder Danni Napoli doubled home senior infielder Kylie Papagelos to put the team ahead, 1-0. 
  • Junior infielder Brooke Wolff added a run in the second inning with an RBI double through the left side to plate junior infielder Abbey Whitney, and came around to score on a base running play later in the inning, making it 3-0. 
  • Clarkson brought home a run in the bottom of the second inning and added two more in the bottom of the third to tie the game. 
  • Wolff added two more RBI on a single to center field in the sixth inning and senior outfielder Alyssa Persich laced a two-run single to center as the Knights took a four-run lead, 7-3. 
  • Junior pitcher Ashlyn Kersch twirled a complete game, allowing three earned runs on six hits while recording five strikeouts to improve her record to 4-1 from the circle. 

GAME TWO - Geneseo 9, Bowdoin 4

  • Senior catcher Taylor Fedor opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning, but Bowdoin plated four runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Wolff led off with a triple and came home on a groundout by Persich. Papagelos followed with a base hit before Napoli sent the game-tying and record-tying home run over the left field fence, making it 4-4. First-year infielder Taylor Riccardi drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout later in the inning, giving the Knights a 5-4 lead.
  • In the sixth, Persich and Fedor each recorded an RBI as Geneseo extended its lead with four insurance runs. 
  • Senior pitcher Taylor Moore finished the game to earn her second win of the season, improving to 2-1 with 3.2 innings of shutout relief. 

QUICK FACTS

  • Wolff finished the day with four hits in five at-bats, a double, two triples, three RBI and four runs scored. Her three triples so far this season ranks seventh in program history. 
  • With her 18th-career home run, Napoli ties Samantha Trapasso '14 as Geneseo's all-time home run leader.
  • Persich recorded four hits and four RBI in the two games combined and has hit safely in seven-consecutive contests.

Geneseo improves to 8-2 on the year and will close its spring break trip with games against Wellesley and Wisconsin-Stout on Friday, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
