Softball Earns Pair of Run-Rule Sweeps

CLERMONT, Fla. - SUNY Geneseo senior pitcher Taylor Moore twirled a five-hit shutout and drove in a career-high four runs in game two as the Knights completed a sweep, defeating Nichols, 9-0, and Bethany, 14-0.

GAME ONE - Geneseo 9, Nichols 0

  • Sophomore pitcher Nicole Schwartz held the Bison to just four hits, striking out one batter in five shutout innings for her first win of the season.
  • First-year infielder Alexandra Koutsogiannis drove in the Knights' first run with a single down the left field line in the first inning. 
  • Senior infielder Kylie Papagelos drove in a run in the second with an RBI single before senior outfielder Danni Napoli ripped a two-run home run to right-center field, putting the Knights ahead, 4-0. 
  • In the third inning, junior outfielder Hannah Elmer hit a solo shot to right-center and first-year infielder Phoebe Elardo added an RBI single later in the inning to extend the Geneseo lead to 6-0. 
  • The Knights added three more runs in the fourth as Koutsogiannis, Elardo and senior outfielder Alyssa Persich each hit RBI singles. 

GAME TWO - Geneseo 14, Bethany 0

  • Senior catcher Taylor Fedor started the scoring, driving home Persich with a double to left in the first.
  • In the third inning, Elmer drove out a three-run home run, her third of the season, to extend the Knights' lead to 4-0. Later in the inning, sophomore outfielder Angela Van Pelt added an RBI groundout, pushing the advantage to 5-0. 
  • Geneseo added three runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth to close out the Bison and complete the sweep.

QUICK FACTS

  • The Knights recorded 23 hits over the two games combined, batting .460 (23-for-50), to score 23 combined runs. 
  • Elmer has hit a home run in each of her past three games, while Napoli recorded her 17th career home run, one shy of the Geneseo program record. 
  • First-years Taylor Riccardi, Phoebe Elardo and Stephanie Afonso each recorded their first-career hit. 
  • Geneseo recorded its third and fourth shutout of the season, dropping the team ERA to 1.62.
  • Schwartz has thrown 12.0 scoreless innings to begin the season, allowing just seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks in that span.
