Elmer Grand Slam Highlights Softball Twinbill Split

CLERMONT, Fla. – SUNY Geneseo junior outfielder Hannah Elmer finished with five RBI to lead the Knights to a doubleheader split, defeating Concordia-Wisconsin, 5-3, before falling to Calvin, 7-5 in 10 innings.

GAME 1 – Geneseo 5, Concordia-Wisc. 3

  • The Knights struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning as Elmer and junior infielder Abbey Whitney each laced RBI singles, making it 2-0.
  • Concordia responded with a run in the bottom of the second inning, but the Knights rallied in the top of the third when senior pitcher Jasmine Petrishin hammered a double off the left field fence to drive in two, extending the Knights lead to 4-1.
  • The Falcons cut the deficit to 4-3, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning, but Geneseo worked out of a jam to preserve the lead.
  • In the fifth, sophomore outfielder Samantha Seeger drew a bases loaded hit by pitch to drive in an insurance run, making the score 5-3.

GAME 2 – Calvin 7, Geneseo 5 (10 Inn.)

  • Geneseo jumped on Calvin in the first inning as seniors Alyssa Persich, Danni Napoli and Taylor Fedor loaded the bases for Elmer, who teed off on a pitch sending it over the left field fence for her first career grand slam, making it 4-0.
  • Calvin chipped away at the lead with two runs in the second inning and tied it with two more in the third, but the Knights regained the lead when Napoli doubled home a run in the fourth inning to make it 5-4.
  • Calvin tied the game in the top of the sixth inning, but junior pitcher Ashlyn Kersch limited the damage and forced extra innings.
  • In the extra frames, Geneseo had several chances to score the game-winning run, but ultimately fell, 7-5, in the 10th.

QUICK FACTS

  • Elmer recorded a career-high four RBI in game two, bringing her season total to a team-best 10. She recorded seven RBI in her previous two years combined.
  • Persich combined for three hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored while first-year infielder Alexandra Koutsogiannis combined for three hits and Fedor and Napoli each went 3-for-5 in game two.
  • Kersch earned the win in game one allowing just three hits over 4.2 shutout innings, but took the loss in game two, allowing three runs (two earned) over eight innings pitched.

Geneseo will return to action on Wednesday, March 18 with games against Nichols and Bethany (W.V.), beginning at 9:00 a.m.
