Men's Lacrosse Shuts Down Potsdam, 9-4

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo senior midfielder Andrew Cummings scored two goals while sophomore goalie Tyler Wetzel compiled a career-high 16 saves to lead the Knights to a 9-4 victory over visiting Potsdam, Saturday, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's lacrosse.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Cummings opened the scoring on a 12-yard shot from the top of the zone before senior attackman Ryan Kelly scored on a five-yard jump-shot two minutes later to put the Knights on top, 2-0, at 8:45 of the first quarter.
  • Potsdam got one back with a goal at 7:19, but a close-range quick-stick in transition by sophomore attackman Matthew Malone off a feed from first-year attackman Tim Fallo staked Geneseo to a 3-1 lead with 56 seconds left in the quarter.
  • The Bears opened the second quarter with a tally at 12:52, but the Knights took a 6-2 lead following a 3-0 run. Junior attackman Kyle Wanamaker notched a man-up tally at 11:49 before first-year attackman Ryan Dorney scored in transition at 10:35. A short bouncer by Cummings trickled past the Potsdam keeper at 8:08 to close the first-half scoring.
  • Geneseo extended its lead to 8-2 in the first four minutes of the second half. Kelly hit a wide-open Fallo with a scoring feed on the right post at 13:28 before Pratt notched an unassisted tally at 11:29.
  • Potsdam scored 23 seconds later to trail 8-3 into the fourth quarter.
  • Geneseo opened a 9-3 edge after Pratt fed a long pass from the top of the zone to sophomore attackman Dillon Rogers, who was open for a score inside the right post at 10:12.

QUICK FACTS

  • Six Knights registered two points apiece on a goal and an assist.
  • Wetzel improved to 5-2 this spring while eclipsing the 14 saves he compiled in Geneseo's 6-5 win at Clarkson (Mar. 24) earlier this season.
  • The Knights finished the game with a 36-28 advantage in ground balls, led by team-highs of four each by sophomore midfielder Teddy McCabe and first-year defender Tyler Bushnell
