Softball Settles for Split against Alfred

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo juniors Anna Merante and Kylie Papagelos each went deep but the Knights were forced to settle for a split, defeating Alfred, 8-0, in game one, but falling to the Saxons, 2-1, in game two.

GAME ONE

  • Junior pitcher Taylor Moore earned a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits, to stymie the Saxons at the plate.
  • Merante put the Knights on the board in the first inning with a two-run home run well clear of the 220-foot mark in straightaway center field. The Knights scored a run in the second before Merante added an RBI double in the third inning that made it 4-0.
  • In the fourth, Papagelos blasted a three-run home run over the left-field fence to increase the lead to 7-0.
  • Junior catcher Taylor Fedor brought home the eighth run on an RBI double in the sixth inning, forcing a run-rule victory.

GAME TWO

  • Sophomore pitcher Ashlyn Kersch tossed eight innings, allowing two earned runs and recording a pair of strikeouts. She added a double, a stolen base and a run scored to help her own cause.
  • After Alfred took a 1-0 lead, Kersch led off the third inning with a double. Junior outfielder Alyssa Persich singled to move Kersch to third, and got caught in a run down, allowing Kersch to swipe home to score the tying run.
  • In the eighth, Alfred scored the go-ahead run on an RBI double and held the Knights scoreless to close out the extra-inning victory.

QUICK FACTS

  • Moore earned her first complete-game shutout of the season and the sixth of her career. She recorded three complete-game shutouts last season and two in the 2015-16 campaign.
  • In her past four starts, Fedor has recorded seven hits, including five doubles, and driven in five runs.
  • Papagelos and Merante become the third set of teammates to homer in the same game this season. Merante and sophomore Abbey Whitney both went long in a 13-1 win over Concordia (March 11) while Fedor and senior outfielder Claire VanNewkirk each crushed one against Ohio Wesleyan (March 14).

WHAT'S NEXT?

Geneseo's doubleheader schedule for Friday at Potsdam was postponed, so the Knights will travel to Plattsburgh on Saturday for a conference twinbill.
