Knights Make Playoff Push With Sweep Of Oswego

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore outfielder Danni Napoli went 4-for-4 in game one while senior pitcher Alexis Kidder and first-year pitcher Ashlyn Kersch combined for a pair of outstanding performances as the Knights completed a sweep of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe Oswego, 9-2 and 4-0.

GAME ONE
Napoli went 4-for-4 with a solo home run and three runs scored while sophomore catcher Taylor Fedor drove in a career-high four runs to propel the Geneseo offense. Kidder tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on nine hits and striking out five Lakers.

Oswego plated one in the top of the first, but the Knights responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The hosts loaded the bases with no outs for sophomore infielder Anna Merante, who brought home a run with a sharp groundout. Senior outfielder Alyssa Presutti scored on a wild pitch and Napoli came home on an RBI single by sophomore outfielder Alyssa Persich, putting the team ahead 3-1.

The Lakers scored once in the top of the second, but from there Kidder shut down their bats while the Knights continued to drive home runs. Fedor broke the game open in the fifth inning with a three-run double that put the home team ahead 8-2. Napoli added her solo blast in the sixth as the squad rolled to a win.

GAME TWO
Kersch took the circle in game two, throwing a complete-game shutout. She recorded five strikeouts while allowing just four hits to keep the Lakers off the scoreboard and allow the Knights to complete the sweep.

Geneseo applied pressure in the second inning when Merante and senior infielder Abby Dennett reached base with no outs. The two were moved over into scoring position by a sacrifice and then came home on an Oswego throwing error to make it 2-0.

In the fourth, the Knights added a pair of insurance runs on a big hit by first-year infielder Maddison Tucker. Tucker ripped a ball to the left-center gap, plating Dennett and Merante again to give the home team a 4-0 lead, but was caught stretching the hit at second base. The run support was plenty for Kersch, who retired six of the final seven Lakers she faced.

PLAYOFF CHASE
Geneseo sits at 8-8 in the SUNYAC standings, currently ranked seventh, but remain just one game back of Buffalo State, Oswego, Oneonta and New Paltz (9-7). The Knights must win at least one game against Cortland on Saturday to remain in the playoff hunt.

UP NEXT
Geneseo will take on Cortland in a home doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. The team will celebrate its four-member senior class in a brief pre-game ceremony.
