Fourth Quarter Comeback Gives Men's Lacrosse 13-12 Victory Over Alfred

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior attacker Michael Engstrom scored three goals, including the game-winner with 3:03 remaining, to give the Knights a come-from-behind victory, 13-12, over Alfred on Sunday afternoon at College Stadium.

Junior attacker Alex Leuze and sophomore attacker Kyle Wanamaker each had two goals and two assists while senior Tim Wright and sophomore Zachary DeBottis each had a pair of goals and an assist. First-year goalkeeper Tyler Wetzel earned the victory in net, making one save and blanking the Saxons over the final 11:31. Junior long-stick midfielder Chris Dunn led the team with five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

The Knights (2-0) opened the contest with a pair of goals to take a 2-0 lead at the 8:25 mark, but Alfred answered with five straight to gain a 5-2 advantage with 3:42 left in the first quarter. In the final seconds of the frame junior attacker Ryan Kelly ripped a shot, beating the Alfred keeper high to make it 5-3 at the break.

Geneseo netted two goals in the first 1:22 of the second quarter to tie the game, 5-5, but Alfred regained the lead at 7:12 mark and scored again in the final minute of the frame to make it 7-5 as the teams entered halftime.

In the third quarter, the Knights cut the Alfred lead down to one twice, but back-to-back goals by the Saxons gave the visitors a 10-7 advantage with 6:12 remaining. Engstrom and Leuze answered with back-to-back goals to make it 10-9 with 4:09 to go. After another Alfred tally, Wanamaker notched his second of the game in the final minute of the period as Geneseo entered the fourth quarter trailing 11-10.

Alfred extended its lead to 12-10 on a loose ball pick-up and quick shot with 11:31 to play, prompting the Knights to switch to Wetzel in goal. With 10:04 to play, senior midfielder Dane Bentley found the net to make it 12-11.

On the next Alfred possession, Dunn came away with a crucial caused turnover and cleared the ball to give the Knights a chance to tie. With 7:13 remaining Wanamaker controlled the ball on the right side and found Wright streaking in front of the goal mouth. Wright caught the pass and flipped a shot behind his back, beating the goalie far post to tie the game at 12-12.

The Saxons pressed for a game-winning goal, working the ball around their offensive zone before first-year defender Augie Holekamp caused a turnover, allowing Wright to scoop a ground ball, giving the Knights possession and a chance to pull ahead. With 3:03 to go, Leuze found Engstrom in front for the go-ahead tally, making it 13-12. Wetzel made a crucial save and clear in the final minute as the Knights ran out the clock for the victory.

Geneseo begins the season with a 2-0 mark for the third consecutive year and will return to action on Saturday, March 11, when the team hosts Scranton.
