Softball Caps Florida Trip With Pair Of Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. - SUNY Geneseo first-year pitcher Ashlyn Kersch and senior pitcher Alexis Kidder each tossed gems as the Knights earned a pair of victories to cap their spring break trip on Thursday, beating Lancaster Bible, 12-0, and University of New England, 6-1.

GAME ONE
All nine Geneseo (7-3) starters to receive an at-bat recorded at least one base hit as the Knights' offense exploded for a season-high 12 runs. First-year infielders Hannah Elmer and Brooke Wolff each went 3-for-3 from the plate to lead the way while Kersch twirled a five-inning, two-hit game, striking out a career-high nine Chargers.

First-year outfielder Abbey Whitney ripped an RBI double to bring home Elmer in the first inning and senior infielder Taylor Knowles laced an RBI single to put Geneseo ahead 2-0. Junior infielder Tori Fahie blasted a three-run double to key a four-run third inning and first-year infielder Elyse Fuerst ripped a two-run double in the fourth as the Knights took a 10-0 lead. Geneseo added another pair of runs in the fifth to close out the game with a win.

Five different Geneseo first-years (Elmer, Wolff, Fuerst, Samantha Pompa and Alexis Thomas) recorded their first career hit in the win.

GAME TWO
Kidder went the distance, striking out five Nor'easters while allowing just one earned run on four hits to lead the Knights to the win. Sophomore infielder Kylie Papagelos finished 3-for-4 from the plate with two runs and a stolen base.

UNE manufactured a run in the first inning on a pair of hits, but Geneseo responded in the bottom of the frame. After sophomore outfielder Alyssa Persich led off with a triple deep to right field, first-year Maddison Tucker brought her home with an RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-1.

In the fourth, the Knights brought home three runs on four hits and an error to take a 4-1 lead. Papagelos and senior infielder Abby Dennett each singled to set the table for sophomore catcher Taylor Fedor, who laid down a bunt that UNE misplayed into a Geneseo run. Persich and sophomore outfielder Danni Napoli followed with RBI singles to give the Knights insurance runs.

After Kidder retired the Nor'easters in order, Geneseo added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Dennett pulled an RBI single down the left field line and Persich grounded out for an RBI, giving the Knights a 6-1 lead.

Kidder worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the sixth, retiring the UNE 3-4-5 hitters in order to end the threat. The senior breezed through the seventh with three straight outs to close the game and give the Knights a win.

Geneseo will travel back to Upstate New York to host Rochester on Saturday, March 25, with the doubleheader set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
