Papagelos' Squeeze Highlights Softball Split In Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore infielder Kylie Papagelos laid down a game-winning squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh to score sophomore outfielder Danni Napoli, giving the Knights a win over Salve Regina, 6-5, in game two of Wednesday's doubleheader. The team split a pair of games at Hancock Park in Clermont.

GAME ONE
Sophomore outfielder Alyssa Persich finished 2-for-2 and sophomore Taylor Moore added a hit as the Geneseo offense was limited by Susquehanna. Moore took the loss on the mound, her first of the season, as the Riverhawks scored five runs over the first three innings and added six more in the fifth for the 11-0 victory.

GAME TWO
Papagelos finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, including the game-winner on a seventh-inning squeeze play that plated Napoli for the winning run. Persich went 3-for-4 with a stolen base while first-year infielder Maddison Tucker and senior outfielder Alyssa Presutti each ripped RBI doubles.

In five innings pitched, first-year Ashlyn Kersch allowed four runs (none earned) on six hits and recorded three strikeouts, earning a no-decision. In two relief innings, Moore allowed one run on two hits, struck out two and earned the victory to improve to 4-1.

Sophomore infielder Anna Merante hit an RBI single and Papagelos knocked a two-run single as the Knights plated three runs in the first inning. Salve Regina responded with a four-run third, taking advantage of three Geneseo errors. The Knights took a 5-4 lead with two runs in the fourth as Presutti and Tucker each drove RBI doubles, but the Seahawks tied the game in the top of the sixth.

In the seventh, Napoli reached base on an error to lead off and moved into scoring on a bunt single by Merante. With two on and no out, Moore sacrificed to move the runners over. Papagelos followed with a perfectly placed squeeze bunt that scored Napoli, giving the Knights the victory.

Geneseo will finish its Florida trip with two games on Thursday, taking on Lancaster Bible at 10:30 a.m. and University of New England at 1:00 p.m.
