Softball Drops 1-0 Loss To Top-Seeded Cortland in SUNYAC Tournament

Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y.– SUNY Geneseo senior Mikayla Moore held top-seeded Cortland to one run, but the Knights fell 1-0 to the Red Dragons in the SUNYAC Tournament, Saturday. Geneseo (25-16) dropped its first game in the double-elimination championship and will now face Buffalo St., with a win necessary to remain in the tournament.

The Knights and the Bengals are both 2-1, while Cortland is unbeaten at 3-0. The winner of the game between Geneseo and Buffalo St. will play Cortland tomorrow at 11 a.m. Cortland is now 34-9, ranked number three in the Northeast Region and number 29 nationally.

The host Red Dragons scored their single run unearned in the fourth frame. Cortland loaded the bases with no out on a single, infield error and bunt single. After a sacrifice fly to center scored one run, Moore retired the last two on a strikeout and ground out to limit the damage.

The Knights only had one base runner reach scoring position. In the second, senior Jenna Phillips singled and advanced to second on a walk to junior Abby Dennett, but was left stranded. Senior Cat Krok, first-year Taylor Fedor and sophomore Emily Martin had Geneseo's other hits, all singles.

The Knights had a chance in the top of the seventh, but the Red Dragon defense halted the potential rally. With one out, junior Alyssa Presutti drew a pinch-hit walk and Dennett followed with a line drive up the middle. The Cortland center fielder short-hopped the ball and quickly threw to second to force out Presutti, who had to wait to see if the ball was caught.

Moore (11-7) allowed the one unearned run on six hits, walking three and striking out two.

Sixth-seeded Buffalo St. eliminated second-seeded Plattsburgh in the day's first game, a resumption of a contest started yesterday, 6-3. The Bengals also defeated New Paltz on Friday after dropping their first contest against Cortland.

Geneseo has defeated two teams ranked in the Northeast Region in the tournament, topping number seven Oneonta, 9-1 to open the championship, and beating number nine Plattsburgh, 8-6 on Friday.
