Box Score TAMPA, Fla. - SUNY Geneseo senior midfielder Joe Chiara and sophomore Ryan Kelly recorded two goals apiece but it was Clarkson coming away with the 8-7 overtime victory at the University of Tampa's Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex, Wednesday night.
Geneseo (2-2) opened the game with three-straight goals to take an early lead. Following a score by Chiara off an assist from junior midfielder Sean Tomkinson at 12:51 in the first quarter, first-year attackman Zachary DeBottis found the back of the net at 8:22. With 5:06 on the clock, Kelly had a man-up goal off an assist from junior attackman Tim Wright to make it a 3-0 game.
The Golden Knights (2-3) responded with a goal just nine seconds later and with a score during a man-up opportunity at 2:54 to pull within one, 3-2.
At 6:39 in the second quarter, Clarkson scored its third-straight of the period, two of which were man-up goals, to take a 5-3 advantage. With 4:27 to go in the half, Kelly notched a man-up goal off an assist from junior midfielder Michael Engstrom to cut the Knights' deficit to one, 5-4, at the break.
The third quarter saw only one goal, a tally by the Golden Knights at the 9:19 mark to extend their lead back to two, 6-4.
Geneseo answered with three-consecutive goals to start the fourth quarter. First-year attackman Kyle Wanamaker scored at 9:50, Wright had a goal off an assist from sophomore defender Ryan Cates at 8:34 and Chiara scored the go-ahead goal at 2:38, giving the Knights a 7-6 lead.
With 1:05 remaining in regulation, Clarkson junior midfielder Ryan St. Croix scored a goal to send the game into overtime. The Golden Knights won the opening face-off and after 47 seconds, St. Croix registered the game-winner and his fourth goal of the night.
Geneseo returns to action next Tuesday, March 22, for a game at Wells scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
