Men's Lacrosse Wins Season Opener Versus Lycoming, 11-6

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo first-year attackman Zachary DeBottis had a game-high three goals and handed out an assist while junior attackman Tim Wright also notched four points with one goal and three assists to lead the Knights to an 11-6 season-opening victory over visiting Lycoming, Saturday, in non-conference men's lacrosse action.

Geneseo (1-0) struck first as sophomore attackman Ryan Kelly scored off an assist from DeBottis at 12:50 in the first quarter. At the 2:33 mark, junior midfielder Sean Tomkinson found the back of the net off a pass from senior midfielder Joe Chiara to make it a 2-0 game. DeBottis extended the Knights' lead with an unassisted tally at 1:32 as the team held onto their 3-0 advantage through the end of the quarter.

The Warriors (0-2) got on the board with a man-up goal at 11:17 in the second quarter. Geneseo answered at 8:40 with a goal by junior attackman Ryan Gulbransen off an assist from Wright. Following another Lycoming man-up score to bring the visitors within two, 4-2, Wright recorded a goal off a pass from Kelly at 1:20 as the Knights went into halftime with a 5-2 lead.

Geneseo scored three-straight goals to open the third quarter and take an 8-2 lead at the 11:57 mark. Gulbransen had a man-up tally at 14:18 while Tomkinson and Chiara each scored unassisted at 13:39 and 11:57, respectively.

The Warriors tacked on a goal at 7:01 in the third quarter to make it 8-3 as neither team added to the scoreboard for the remainder of the period.

At 11:10 in the fourth quarter, DeBottis made it 9-3 off an assist from Gulbransen. After a Lycoming goal at 8:57, the Knights scored twice to take their largest lead of the game, 11-4, with 5:43 left to play. The goals came from DeBottis and Kelly and both were assisted by Wright. The Warriors scored twice in the final two minutes but were unable to overcome the seven-goal deficit.

Sophomore goalie Michael Yehl made nine saves to secure the victory as Geneseo picked up 35 ground balls to Lycoming's 25.

The Knights return to action next Wednesday, March 2, for a match-up at Alfred State scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
