Box Score TROY, N.Y. – SUNY Genseo senior goalkeeper Dayna Mercer was credited with a career-high 21 saves, while sophomore forward Cara Stafford scored her first goal of the season, but it was host Rensslaer holding on for the 2-1 victory, Sunday.
With the performance, Mercer moved past Amanda Carver '06 for first-place on Geneseo's career saves list with 362 to date. The 21 saves also tied for the third-highest single-game total in program history and was the most since Carver made 23 versus Houghton during the 2005 campaign. It was only five stops short of Lori Telesco's school-record 26 opposite Ithaca during her senior season in 1999.
The Engineers' pressure proved to be the difference as the hosts built a 30-8 advantage in shots, including 24-4 on goal.
RPI (3-0) got on the board with six minutes to go in the first half after sophomore midfielder Megan Jones tapped home a short goal following a rush on the Knights' cage. The Engineers took a 2-0 lead into halftime after senior forward Angela Casio found the net with a shot into the upper left corner after a scramble off a penalty corner with no time showing on the clock.
Eight minutes into the second half, sophomore Giovanna Fasanello was awarded a penalty stroke but first-year RPI goalkeeper Rachel Kaufman turned aside her attempt at the left post with a diving save to keep the Knights scoreless.
Geneseo (1-1) got on the board with 10:17 remaining as three Knights got loose behind the RPI defense for a breakaway attempt. Kaufman came off her line in an attempt to break up the play, but first-year forward Gabriella Clare flipped a short pass to Stafford on her left to set up a quick shot inside the left post that pulled the Knights within one.
Geneseo returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to William Smith for a 7:00 p.m. start in Geneva, N.Y.
