Rey Scores Double-Overtime Game Winner As Field Hockey Tops Vassar

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team survived a back-and-forth battle with Vassar College on Sunday, needing double overtime before pulling out a 3-2 win in Poughkeepsie. Lauren Rey's game winner in the 73rd minute keeps the Knights perfect at 3-0 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Vassar struck first just over five minutes in on a penalty stroke, taking a 1-0 lead into the second half.
  • Geneseo evened the score late in the third quarter, as Aubree Wenner buried a feed from Kyra Giannelli to make it 1-1.
  • The Knights took their first lead of the game midway through the fourth quarter off a penalty corner, when Ava Harman converted another Giannelli assist to put Geneseo ahead 2-1.
  • Vassar answered right back, tying the game at 2-2 with a goal at the buzzer to force the extra session.
  • Neither team could find the net in the first overtime period, but Geneseo broke through in the second OT, as Lauren Rey scored an unassisted goal at 72:21 to secure the 3-2 win.
  • Giannelli finished with a pair of assists on Geneseo's first two goals, while Bridget Schafer made four saves in net to preserve the victory.
