GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team pulled out a tough 4-3 road win to open up their 2026 campaign on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The Knights have now won their season opener in four-straight years.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Knights conceded an early goal under a minute into the action, but they responded quickly on offense with reigning All-American and Empire 8 Player of the Year Ella Greico beating the RPI defense for a goal off a pass from Aubree Wenner.
- Geneseo couldn't hold the lead for long, and entered the second quarter with a 2-1 deficit. However, sophomore midfielder Lauren Rey found the equalizer for the Knights off an assist from Ava Harman.
- With the score knotted at 2-2, Geneseo came out hot to start the second half, scoring twice in the third quarter to take their first lead of the game and enter the final 15 minutes with a two-goal lead. Harman tallied her second assist of the day, finding Wenner for the goal to make it 3-2, then just before the end of the third quarter, Harman scored for the Knights to extend the lead.
- RPI was able to find the back of the goal late in the fourth quarter, but the Geneseo defense held strong in the closing minutes to secure the season-opening win.
QUICK FACTS:
- Harman led the way offensively with two goals and an assist, while Greico, Rey, and Wenner also scoring their first goals of the season.
- Bridget Schafer earned the win in goal, tallying seven saves.
- The Knights have now won their last six games against RPI.

Geneseo will continue its season on the road this weekend, traveling to Skidmore and Vassar on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
