Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior midfielder Steve Aziz recorded three points on two goals and one assist while senior attackman Steven Cregan and junior midfielder Joe Chiara each had a goal and two assists for the Knights but it was No. 13 Cortland taking the 11-9 road victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, Wednesday.
In its first home game of the season, Geneseo (4-6, 0-3 SUNYAC) fell behind early, 4-0, and were down 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. Back-to-back goals by senior attackman Benjamin Dunleavy opened the scoring for the Red Dragons. After another Cortland tally, Dunleavy scored his third goal of the quarter to give the visitors a four-goal lead at 10:41. Dunleavy finished with a game-high five goals.
Chiara got the Knights on the board with a man-up goal at the 9:17 mark while junior attackman Ryan Gulbransen made it a 4-2 game with a tally off a Cregan assist at 7:31. Cortland scored with just two seconds remaining to take a 5-2 advantage into the second period.
The Red Dragons (7-4, 2-0 SUNYAC) recorded three goals in the second quarter, including another score by Dunleavy at 6:18 that gave the visitors an 8-2 lead it would carry into halftime.
At 12:05 in the third quarter, Aziz scored the first of six-straight goals for Geneseo. After Gulbransen and senior midfielder Patrick O'Brien scored at 7:20 and 5:47, respectively, sophomore midfielder Michael Engstrom found the back of the net in the final minute of the quarter to cut the Knights' deficit to two, 8-6.
With 13:47 on the clock in the final period of play, Cregan scored to bring the hosts within one. Just under a minute later, Engstrom tallied his second goal of the game to tie it up at eight. However, Cortland responded with back-to-back goals to take a 10-8 edge at 9:52. With 8:25 remaining, Aziz scored unassisted to bring Geneseo back within one.
With two Knights in the penalty box, the Red Dragons scored a man-up goal at 5:09 to make it 10-8. Geneseo recorded five shots in their final possession of the game but were unable to get back on the board.
Cregan finished the afternoon with a game-high eight ground balls while first-year goalkeeper Michael Yehl made 11 saves.
The Knights are scheduled to play at St. John Fisher this Saturday at 1 p.m.
