Softball Wins First Game of SUNYAC Tournament, Beating Brockport 6-1

Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Seniors Ashley Fillmore and Kayleigh Blersch had home runs, while senior pitcher Corrin Spallone struck out eight and allowed only one run, leading the Geneseo softball team to a 6-1 win in their first game of the SUNYAC softball tournament. The second-seeded Knights will next play on Friday morning, May 1, at 11 a.m. against third-seed Oneonta.

The Knights (26-10) got off to a quick start in the first frame. After Spallone retired Brockport (18-17) in order, including two by strikeout, Fillmore homered to left to lead off the Knights' half of the inning. When the Golden Eagles tied the game with one in the third, Geneseo responded with another solo tally in the bottom of the frame, with Fillmore again the catalyst. The senior catcher walked, stole second, and scored on a single off the bat of junior Courtney Budynas.

The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fourth. After junior Mikayla Moore led off with a walk, sophomore Allie Dananberg came in to pinch run and promptly stole second base. After advancing to third on a Fillmore sacrifice bunt, Dananberg scored on senior Sami Brown's bunt single to make it 3-1. After Brockport recorded a second out, Blersch hit a two-run home run to left field to push the lead to four. The Knights weren't done in the inning as first-year Emily Martin followed with a double and scored on first-year Julia Lalka's pinch-hit single, increasing the lead to 6-1.

Spallone scattered five hits and walked none to record her 15th victory of the season. The eight strikeouts pushed her over the 300 mark for her career, with her total of 305 strikeouts placing her fourth on the Geneseo all-time list. Fillmore's two runs give her a career total of 112, moving her into third place in Knights' softball history.

Geneseo is ranked third in the Northeast Region in the latest NCAA Division III poll, released on Thursday, while Oneonta is ranked sixth. The two teams matched up this past weekend, with the Knights taking both games of the doubleheader, 13-10 (9 inn.), 5-2, which helped clinch the second seed for Geneseo.
