Softball Sweeps Oswego to Even SUNYAC Record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Geneseo, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team captured both ends of a doubleheader Friday against visiting Oswego by matching 11-3 scores. The Knights used big innings to close out both contests early, the first game ending after five frames, the second after six. The run totals in each game were the first time Geneseo has scored in double figures since their first two contests of the season. The Knights evened their SUNYAC record at 3-3 and improved their overall mark to 6-9.

GAME 1: Geneseo 11, Oswego 3
Oswego jumped out early in the first inning of game one, scoring three runs before the Knights could record an out. Starter senior Corrin Spallone limited the damage, stranding two runners and the Knights responded in their half of the inning. Singles by senior Ashley Fillmore and junior Courtney Budynas put runners on and a pair of Laker misplays in the field scored two before junior Jenna Phillips' RBI single to right center tied the game at three.

The game remained deadlocked until the fourth, when the Knights took a 5-3 lead by pushing across two runs on a walk, an error, a fielders choice and a pair of wild pitches. First-year Claire VanNewkirk recorded an RBI with a fielders choice ground out.

Geneseo closed out the game in the bottom of the fifth by exploding for a game-ending six runs. Senior Kayleigh Blersch led off the inning with a double to right-center, followed by a bunt single by first-year Emily Martin. Phillips notched her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3. After junior Mikayla Moore and sophomore Abby Dennett walked, junior Cat Krok hit a run-producing single. Fillmore followed with a single to center to score another pair, making it 9-3, and senior Sami Brown closed out the game with another single to center that plated two runs after a wild throw to home eluded the Oswego catcher.

After the first inning, Spallone allowed only a pair of hits and the win evens her season record at 4-4. For the game she allowed five hits, struck out three, and issued one walk. Seven different Knights recorded hits in the game, with Fillmore the only player with two. Phillips and Fillmore had two RBI, while Krok and Martin scored two runs.

GAME 2: Geneseo 11, Oswego 3
Geneseo kept the momentum by scoring first in game two. Brown singled, stole third and scored on a Blersch single to left field. Oswego answered quickly, however, taking the lead in the top of the second with a two-run home run off sophomore starter Alexis Kidder. The Lakers added on another run in the third, and aided by some strong defensive play on hard-hit balls, took a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning.

First-year Holly Drasser led off the home half of the fifth with a pinch-hit single, and after a Fillmore walk and a pair of wild pitches, Brown tied the game with a double off the wall in right center, advancing to third on the throw. The Knights almost took the lead when Brown attempted to score of a ground ball to third, but she was thrown out at the plate. With two outs the Knights then loaded the bases on a walk to Blersch, a Martin single and an Oswego error on a ground ball by Phillips. Moore singled on a hard hit ball to left field, scoring two, with Phillips plating the third run on an overthrow to home, giving the Knights a 6-3 lead.

Moore, who relieved Kidder in the fourth, struck out the side in the Oswego half of the fifth and the Knights closed out the game in the bottom of the inning. After hitting a foul ball that missed being a home run by a foot, senior Jami Cohen walked. Fillmore singled, and Brown reached base on a fielders choice when Fillmore beat out the attempted force out at second. With the bases loaded, first-year Julia Lalka pinch-hit and in just her fifth plate appearance of the season, drove the ball comfortably over the left-center field fence for a grand slam. It was her first collegiate hit.

Blersch followed with a double and after pinch-hitter sophomore Allie Dananberg sacrificed her to third, pinch-hitter sophomore Melissa Belsky grounded to short, but Blersch beat the throw to the plate, scoring the game-ending run.

Lalka's home run gave her four RBI. Blersch and Brown each had two hits and scored two runs in the nightcap. Moore and Brown had two RBI each, while Fillmore added two runs. Moore took the win on the mount, allowing only one hit and striking out four in 2 1/3 innings. Kidder allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out three in her 3 2/3 innings of work. Neither pitcher allowed a walk.

The Knights have won five of their last eight games. The upcoming schedule features three home contests next week, non-conference games against Keuka (April 7), Nazareth (April 8), before closing out the week against SUNYAC rival Brockport (April 10).
