Softball Splits SUNYAC Doubleheader With Cortland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo softball team split a doubleheader against visiting Cortland in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, Thursday. A walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning by junior Cat Krok gave the Knights a 4-3 victory before the hosts suffered a 4-2 setback in the second game.

GAME 1: Geneseo 4, Cortland 3
In the top of the second inning, Red Dragons junior Carrie Stoddard singled to center field and was out in an attempt to advance to second, allowing senior Erin Wolstenholm to score on the throw. Geneseo tied to the game at one in the bottom-half of the inning after junior Mikayla Moore, who reached on an infield single, scored on an error by the pitcher.

In the bottom of the third, senior Sami Brown singled and eventually scored on a pass ball to give the Knights a 2-1 edge. In the fourth, Krok singled to center field to bring home senior Kayleigh Blersch to make it a 3-1 game.

Cortland (9-7, 1-1 SUNYAC) responded with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at three. A Geneseo error, a walk and a single to center field loaded the bases for the visitors. Wolstenholm walked to score the first run while another walk brought home the tying run.

The game entered extra-innings as neither team tacked on a run in the sixth or seventh inning. Red Dragon senior Courtney Kadish singled with two outs in the top of the eighth but senior pitcher Corrin Spallone struck out the next batter to end the inning. Spallone pitched a complete game, stuck out five and allowed only one earned run.

In the bottom on the eighth, Krok singled to shortstop to drive home sophomore Alyssa Presutti and give the Knights the walk-off win. Presutti pinch ran for junior Courtney Budynas who singled to left field to open the inning.

GAME 2: Cortland 4, Geneseo 2
In the second game, both teams remained scoreless until Geneseo took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Presutti and first-year Holly Drasser started the inning with back-to-back singles to left field. With one out on the board, Brown grounded out to short, allowing Presutti to score. First-year Claire VanNewkirk stepped in for Budynas and singled to right field to bring home Drasser.

However, Cortland tallied four runs in the seventh that proved to be the difference. Sophomore Niki Barbato doubled to right center field to bring in the go-ahead runs for the Red Dragons.

The Knights (4-9, 1-3 SUNYAC) are set to have a home doubleheader tomorrow against Oswego. Game times are 3 and 5 p.m.
