Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Joe Chiara tallied a game-high seven points on six goals and one assist as the Knights defeated visiting Oneonta, 12-7, for their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory, Wednesday.
Trailing 1-0 at 4:10 in the first quarter, senior midfielder Patrick O'Brien scored to tie the game, 1-1. Senior midfielder Steve Aziz scored the go-ahead goal at the 10-second mark while sophomore attackman Tim Wright found the back of the net with three seconds on the clock to give Geneseo a 3-1 edge going into the second period.
At 10:39 in the second quarter, sophomore midfielder Michael Engstrom scored the Knights' fourth-consecutive goal to make it 4-1. However, the Red Dragons responded by tallying three-straight goals, including a man-up score, to tie the game, 4-4, with 37 seconds remaining. At eight seconds, Chiara scored to give Geneseo a 5-4 advantage at the break.
Chiara recorded another goal to give the Knights a 6-4 lead at 14:00 in the third quarter. After an Oneonta (5-6, 2-2 SUNYAC) goal by junior midfielder Connor Coyle, who finished with a team-high three goals, senior midfielder Parker Weeks scored at 7:39 to make it 7-5. In the final seconds, Chiara found the back of the net once more to give Geneseo an 8-5 lead going into the last period of play.
After a goal by Coyle at 14:39 in the fourth quarter to make it 8-6, Chiara scored at 12:15 to bring the hosts' lead back to three, 9-6. Despite another Red Dragons tally just ten seconds later, Chiara made it 10-7 after finding the back of the net at 8:05. Junior attackman Ryan Gulbransen's man-up goal with 3:12 on the clock made it 11-7 and Chiara scored his third goal of the period at 54 seconds to seal the win for the Knights.
Geneseo (5-7, 1-3 SUNYAC) returns to action next Wednesday (April 22) at home opposite Brockport. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
