Softball Loses To No. 9 Luther And Amherst In Clermont, Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. - SUNY Geneseo's softball team lost to No. 9 Luther (Iowa), 11-3, in five innings and Amherst (Mass.), 6-5, on Tuesday in Clermont, Florida.

In the Knights' second meeting against Luther in the last two days, the team opened an early 3-0 lead on the Norse but a five-run second-inning from the designated home team proved to be the difference.

In the top of the first, senior Kayleigh Blersch doubled to center field to score seniors Ashley Fillmore and Sami Brown, who both reached on a singles, to put Geneseo up, 3-0.

After Luther tied the game at three in the bottom the first inning, sophomore Abby Dennett singled to left field, junior Mikayla Moore singled to center field and sophomore Alyssa Presutti singled to left center in the top of the second. However, the Knights were unable to drive home any runs and left all three on base.

The Norse tacked on a run in each of the following three innings to come away with the win.

Opposite Amherst, Geneseo fell behind, 1-0, after senior Donna Leet homered to right-center field. In the top of the third, Amherst tallied four more runs to take a 5-0 lead. Trailing 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Knights got on the board after a home run by junior Courtney Budynas.

In the fifth inning, first-year Emily Martin doubled to center field to score Moore. Budynas continued the scoring with a single to left field to bring home both Brown and Martin and make it a 6-4 game.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Presutti hit a sacrifice fly to score junior Jenna Phillips, who reached on a single to left field, and cut Geneseo's deficit to one, 6-5.

The Knights held Amherst scoreless in the top of the seventh to remain within one. In the bottom half of the inning, Brown singled to center field and Budynas walked after a ground out from Martin to put two on base. However, Geneseo grounded out in its next two at-bats to end the game and the comeback.

The Knights (1-5) return to action Thursday and are set to face St. Lawrence at 5 p.m. before a match-up with Benedictine (Ill.) at 7 p.m.
