Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - First-half goals by SUNY Geneseo first-year midfielder Tess Necaise and first-year forward Gabriella Clare proved to be the difference as the Knights defeated Oswego, 2-1, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) field hockey action, Saturday.
With the victory, the Knights (9-7, 4-2 SUNYAC) clinched the third seed for the SUNYAC Tournament and will travel to second-seeded and defending champion New Paltz on Wednesday, Nov. 4, for the semifinals. The winner will advance to play either top-seeded Cortland or fourth-seeded Oneonta in the championship, hosted by the highest remaining seed, on Saturday, Nov. 7.
Necaise opened the scoring in the 15th minute, scoring on a high shot into the left corner of the goal off a feed from Necaise and senior defender Elena Hingston during a penalty corner attempt.
Less than four minutes later, Clare cleaned up a scramble in front of the Laker net with a back-handed shot inside the right post for what proved to be the game-winning tally.
The teams played the rest of the first half and over 15 minutes of the second half scoreless until Oswego (3-10, 2-4 SUNYAC) got on the board in the 61st minute after Emily Lange collected a rebound off a deflected shot during a penalty corner attempt and scored from close range for the one-goal final.
Geneseo senior goalie Dayna Mercer was credited with five saves to earn her ninth victory of the season as the Knights out-shot the Lakers, 15-9.
Mercer, Hingston and their three classmates - midfielder Brittney Baron, forward Sarah Malinak and forward Kailey Suhr - were all honored in a halftime ceremony celebrating the members of the Class of 2016.
