Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo junior back Terence McGovern and senior midfielder Patrick Gunty tallied second-half goals less than three minutes apart to lead the men's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout versus Clarkson in its home opener on a hot Friday afternoon at Saratoga Field.
"There was definitely room for us to improve how we played in the first half, but I was pleased with how our guys responded in the second," said head coach Dom Oliveri. "At halftime, I talked about how we needed to out-play the other team with our effort, especially on a warm day when the conditions were pretty tough, and our guys dug down and found a way to win."
On an afternoon with the temperatures hovering in the low 90s, the teams played a back-and-forth, scoreless first half with neither team putting together many solid scoring chances.
With the clock ticking into the 75th minute, the Knights pushed the ball into the right corner of the field where first-year midfielder Reidis Lata struck a long cross into the penalty area where McGovern headed a 10-yard shot over Clarkson goalkeeper Michael King and inside the left post for the game's first goal.
Less than three minutes later, Geneseo was awarded a corner kick in the right corner of the field. Gunty looped a long ball into the far side of the goal mouth that deflected off the left post and into the Clarkson net to give Geneseo a 2-0 edge with under 13 minutes remaining in regulation.
Junior goalkeeper Logan Calvey was credited with three saves in each half to clinch his second-straight shutout. Clarkson held a 6-4 shot advantage after the first half, but the Knights out-shot the visitors 12-5 in the final 45 minutes en route to the victory.
Geneseo (2-1) returns to action on Saturday, hosting St. Lawrence for a 3:00 p.m. matinee.
