Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior midfielder Jaisen Clark tallied three of the team's 14 shots but it was Drew who capitalized offensively to come away with a 1-0 victory, Friday, on the first day of the Drew Fall Festival Tournament.
"This was a tough result for us because we played well on both ends of the field," said head coach Dominic Oliveri. "Defensively, we played smart and limited their chances and while we created numerous opportunities offensively, we just couldn't find the back of the net."
Shots abounded for both squads in the first half but neither could get on the board. Drew controlled much of play the first few minutes, but the Knights settled in and had better play for the remainder of the period. In the 43rd minute, junior forward Jesse Levy and first-year back Kevin McGrath hit back-to-back solid shots on goal, both of which were stopped by the Rangers' goalkeeper.
Both teams traded blows in the second half and neither team broke through until the 74th minute when the Rangers' (1-0-0) John Nogiewich flicked the ball over junior goalkeeper Logan Calvey. The Knights were unable to string together another strong offensive series for rest of the competition.
"The goal affected us mentally so we did not play as well as we could have in the last 15 minutes of the game. The biggest thing I am looking for tomorrow is how we react to tonight's result," said Oliveri.
Calvey was credited with two saves in 90 minutes of action as the Knights recorded 14 shots and allowed only three shots on goal.
Geneseo returns to action Saturday against Susquehanna at 3:00 p.m. in second-round play in New Jersey.
