Softball Eliminated By Oneonta, 5-4, In Extra Innings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ONEONTA, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo sophomore Mikayla Moore went 1-for-3 with a two-run double during a three-run sixth inning that brought the Knights out of a 3-0 hole, but it was Oneonta pulling out a 5-4 victory in nine innings to elimnate the Knights from the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Softball Tournament, Friday.

Geneseo (18-16) fell behind early as the top-seeded Red Dragons (27-9) plated a pair of runs in the first inning to chase Knights' starting pitcher junior Corrin Spallone. Oneonta tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI triple by Jamie Wittam to put fourth-seeded Geneseo down three.

The Knights' sixth-inning rally began with runners on first and second and one out following a single by sophomore second baseman Jenna Phillips. Moore smacked a double to left that plated Phillips and senior third baseman Elise Porreca to make it a one-run game. Sophomore pinch hitter Courtney Budynas followed with a double down the left field line to score junior pinch runner Katie Muller and even the score, 3-3.

The score would remain that way into the decisive ninth inning. Geneseo struck first after junior shortstop Sami Brown drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third following a sacrifice bunt by senior Sam Trapasso and an infield single by junior center fielder Kayleigh Blersch. Porreca followed with an RBI ground-out to second to give the visitors their first lead of the game.

It was short-lived, however, as a pair of two-out singles and a walk loaded the bases for Oneonta in the bottom half of the inning. The Red Dragons tied the game on a passed ball and won on a walk-ff single by Marlen Cuevas to finish off the Knights.

Moore (6-5) was saddled with the loss, allowing eight hits but only one earned run while striking out six in 8.1 innings of work.

THURSDAY, MAY 1 - BROCKPORT 4, GENESEO 3
Brown went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored while Blersch hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, but it was Brockport holding on for a 4-3 victory over the Knights on the opening day of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Softball Tournament, Thursday, hosted by Oneonta.

Brockport scored all four of its runs unearned in the third inning thanks to a pair of Geneseo fielding errors.

The Knights' comback attempt started in the fifth after junior catcher Ashley Fillmore led off the inning with a walk, and reached third following a passed ball and a ground out by Brown. Blersch lined a 2-2 pitch over the fence to pull Geneseo within two.

Brown led off the seventh inning with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a ground out by Blersch. Porreca knocked Brown in with a two-out single to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but was stranded to end the game.
