Sophomore shortstop Jenna Phillips went 2-for-4 including an RBI double during a five-run fifth inning that broke open a 1-1 game for the Knights en route to the opening-game win.
Junior Corrin Spallone scattered nine hits while only allowing one earned run to pick up the complete-game victory while improving to 11-2 on the season.
Trailing 1-0 with two outs in the third inning, junior catcher Ashley Fillmore dropped a single down the left field line and stole second before Phillips knocked her in with a single up the middle.
In the fifth inning, junior second baseman Jenna Reilley led off with an infield single before Fillmore reached all the way to second on a throwing error by the Cardinal third baseman that also allowed Reilley to advance to third. The next four Knights registered RBI hits that brought four runs across, before senior third baseman Elise Porreca also scored on a throwing error by the Plattsburgh catcher.
Geneseo made it a 7-1 lead in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Porreca to seal the win.
GAME 2 – PLATTSBURGH 5, GENESEO 4
Junior designated player Katie Muller went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while sophomore second baseman Courtney Budynas also went 3-for-4, but it was Plattsburgh coming back from a 3-1 deficit with four runs in the fifth inning to earn the SUNYAC split.
The Knights jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the second inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, sophomore Cat Krok hit an RBI single to centerfield to score first-year Melissa Belsky and advanced to second on the throw home. Muller followed with a run-scoring single that plated Courtney Budynas from third before Krok scored on a throwing error by the Cardinals shortstop.
After Plattsburgh scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it a two-run game, 3-1, Geneseo answered with a run in the top of the fifth. Muller led off with a single to right and later came around after the Cardinals' pitcher mishandled a ball hit back to the circle by first-year Marisa Motisi.
Plattsburgh scored four runs during a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth on four-straight hits, including a pair of doubles. Geneseo was unable to score the equalizer, stranding runners on second and third in the sixth inning and another in the seventh, as the Cardinals earned the split.
Junior Nicole Zimmerman was saddled with the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in three innings of relief of first-year starter Alexis Kidder.
