Men's Lacrosse Plays To 14-3 Loss At No. 8 Cortland

Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior midfielder Joe Cicio tallied a goal and an assist but it was No. 8 Cortland picking up 14-3 victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's lacrosse action, Wednesday.

Cortland (13-6, 6-0 SUNYAC) built a 5-0 first-quarter lead before Knights' (4-8, 2-3 SUNYAC) sophomore midfielder Joe Chiara tallied the only goal of a second quarter that saw the two teams combine for 14 turnovers.

The Red Dragons stretched their lead to 9-1 with four goals in just over five minutes of play to open the third quarter. Junior attackman Brent Lawless scored with 6:45 on the clock, but Cortland responded with back-to-back goals to lead 11-2. Cicio closed the third-quarter scoring, but the hosts tallied three unanswered goals in the final quarter to put the game out of reach.

Geneseo senior goalie Ryan Zaremba was credited with 14 saves in 45 minutes of play, before junior Alex Howell stopped five shots in the final 15 minutes of action.

The Knights close out the regular season at home versus Potsdam (10-4, 4-1 SUNYAC) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. A victory, coupled with a loss by Oneonta, would clinch the fourth and final SUNYAC Tournament playoff spot. Oneonta (4-10, 2-3 SUNYAC) hosts Oswego (6-8, 0-5 SUNYAC) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
