Box Score 2 GENESEO, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo picked up a pair of victories over visiting RIT in softball doubleheader action, Wednesday afternoon, The Knights earned a 6-1 victory in the opener as senior third baseman Elise Porreca went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, before a two-run fifth inning that included a Porreca sacrifice fly brought the host team back for a 3-2 win in game-two.
Geneseo sponsored its annual Strikeout Cancer fundraiser, raising money for the Alex Hollander Education Fund, while both teams wore special uniforms to signify the game and its cause.
GAME 1 – GENESEO 6, RIT 1
Geneseo scored three runs in the first and two more in the second while junior starting pitcher Corrin Spallone threw a complete-game six-hitter with six strikeouts to earn the victory in the opener.
In the first inning, junior catcher Ashley Fillmore drew a lead-off walk and later advanced to third on a ground-out by first-year first baseman Abby Dennett. Fillmore would score on a RIT throwing error on a ground ball hit by sophomore designated player Mikayla Moore, before Porreca mashed a two-run double to right center to score Dennett and Moore.
The second inning saw the Knights plate two unearned runs with two outs. Junior Jenna Reilley reached on a dropped third-strike, before Fillmore drew a walk. Dennett would score Reilley with a RBI single to left and Fillmore would come all the way around to score after the Tigers left fielder misplayed Dennett's hit.
Geneseo made it a 5-0 game after a sacrifice fly by Fillmore scored sophomore second baseman Cat Krok, who led off the inning with a double. RIT got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Spallone improved to 9-2 on the spring with the victory.
GAME 2 – GENESEO 3, RIT 2
Geneseo sophomore shortstop Jenna Phillips led off the bottom of the third inning with her first collegiate home run to bring the Knights back from an early 2-0 deficit for the sweep over RIT.
After allowing a Tiger run in the first and the second, Moore settled down to retire side in the next three innings before stranding four base runners in the final two innings to earn the complete-game victory. Moore notched eight strikeouts while only allowing one walk to pick up her fifth win of the season.
Geneseo brought two runs across in the sixth inning to seal the win. Porreca scored senior pinch-runner Kayleigh Troia before junior center fielder Kayleigh Blersch, who reached with a double to centerfield and advanced to third on Porreca's sacrifice, scored what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch.
Geneseo will close out the regular season with a pair of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheaders at Potsdam (3:00 p.m.) on Friday and Plattsburgh (12:00 p.m.) on Saturday.
