Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo first-year forward Amy Fasel tallied her first two collegiate goals while senior Margaret Gerardi added a goal and an assist to lead the Knights past visiting Morrisville, 8-0, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) field hockey action, Tuesday.
Geneseo (6-3, 3-0 SUNYAC) scored twice in the first two minutes and never looked back en route to their fourth victory in their last five outings.
"I liked the way our team took care of business today," said head coach Jess Seren. "Every game matters during conference play, so it was good to see our players respond the way they did playing their third SUNYAC game in five days."
Senior back Bridget McGovern got the offense going early, dribbling through the Mustangs' defense and scoring from eight yards 1:07 into the game. Fourty-two seconds later, senior forward Kayla DeAngelis made it a 2-0 game after scoring off a rebounded shot from close range. Sophomore forward Sarah Malinak came up with a loose ball during a scramble in front of the Morrisville (0-10, 0-4 SUNYAC) goal and scored from close range to make it a 3-0 game in the fifth minute.
Gerardi deflected an eight-yard shot by sophomore midfielder Elena Hingston on the goal line into the net for her first tally of the season in the 11th minute, before Fasel collected a loose ball and scored on a short shot in the 13th minute to stake the Knights to a 5-0 lead.
Sophomore forward Kailey Suhr netted a goal off an assist from junior back Cathryn Menarchem in the 19th minute, before Junior forward Emily Topping added a tally off an assist from Gerardi to make it a 7-0 Knights' edge in the 20th minute. Fasel scored on a short shot in the 32nd minute as Geneseo went into halftime with an eight-goal edge.
Sophomore Dayna Mercer made two saves in 35 minutes of work, before being spelled by junior Heidi Deppmeyer who made two saves in her first appearance of the season to preserve the shutout.
Geneseo will hit the road for a showdown at No. 12 Skidmore this Saturday (Oct. 5). Faceoff is slated for 12:00 p.m.
