GENESEO, N.Y. - For the first time since the 2016-17 season, the SUNY Geneseo women's basketball team found themselves ranked in the top 25 for the final poll of the season by D3hoops.com. The Knights came in ranked No. 24 in the country in a poll voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country. Geneseo finished the 2016-17 season ranked No. 14 in the country, the program's highest ever ranking by the website.
The Knights capped off their 2024-25 with an incredible postseason run, winning five-straight games over the course of the Empire 8 and NCAA Tournaments to advance to the Sweet 16, where they fell to the eventual two-time National Champion, NYU. Geneseo rattled off two convincing wins at home in the opening rounds of the Empire 8 Tournament, defeating Alfred 68-43 and St. John Fisher 72-54, then traveled to Brockport for the championship game where they avenged two regular season losses with a 66-63 victory. This marked the program's seventh overall conference title, and 12th bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Mackenzie Reigle was named the Tournament MVP, while
Grace Galgano joined her on the All-Tournament Team.
Geneseo drew Catholic for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, who was ranked No. 15 at the time, but the Knights continued their dominant postseason stretch, defeating the hosts handily after leading by double digits for nearly the entire second half. Geneseo went on to earn the program's fifth trip to the Sweet 16 by cruising past Montclair St. in the next round with a 71-49 win. In the Sweet 16, the Knights faced a tall task against undefeated and defending National Champion NYU, but gave the Violets one of their toughest tests of the season as they only trailed by two points at half, 31-29. Unfortunately, Geneseo couldn't keep their run going and ultimately fell 74-53.
Geneseo finished their season with a record 24-7, their highest win total since the 2018-19 season. In the program's 50th season, the Knights registered the program's 800th victory, now holding an overall record of 800-454 for a .638 win percentage. Additionally, the Knights now hold an all-time record of 16-12 in the NCAA Tournament.
Reigle highlighted postseason honors for the Knights by earning WBCA Honorable Mention All-American recognition. Reigle was the statistical champion in the NCAA for assists with 245 total and 7.9 per game. She became the 10th player in program history to earn the distinction, and the 13th overall honor for the program. Reigle set a new program record for assists in a season, surpassing the 186 mark set by P.J. McTigue in the 1998-99 season, and finishes her career second all-time in career assists with 544. Additionally she finished the year averaging 8.4 points per game and 5.2 rebounds, following an impressive postseason run in both the Empire 8 and NCAA Tournaments. Reigle was named the Empire 8 Tournament MVP after averaging 14.0 points, 9.0 assists and 6.7 rebounds per game in Geneseo's three E8 Tournament wins. The Batavia, N.Y. native was a driving force in the Knights NCAA Tournament run to the Sweet 16, where she averaged 16.7 points, 7.3 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game over three games.
