Knights Take Down the Eagles 17-7

Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's lacrosse team hosted Brockport in a SUNYAC matchup and came away with a 17-7 victory against the Golden Eagles on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights are now 11-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play on the season.
?HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Geneseo got on the board early as Emily Salanger found the back of the net off an assist from Reegan Vorgang less than two minutes into the game. Alaina Reina added another goal with the help of Maddie Brown to put the Knights up by two with more than 10 minutes left in the first quarter. A quick goal by Ma. Brown, followed by another from Salanger gave the team a four-goal advantage halfway through the period.
  • Scores from Caitlyn Korzeniewski, Maira Brennan, and Megan Cook combined for another three goals while the defense held strong in the final five minutes of the first to put the Knights ahead 7-1 after one period of play.
  • Brockport found the back of the net first in the second quarter, but that was all they could muster as Cook and Rachel Dickinson quickly scored back-to-back to extend Geneseo's lead to seven with nine minutes left in the half. Salanger went off in the final seven minutes, scoring three goals with two assists from Ma. Brown and another from Molly Brown to give the Knights a 12-2 lead at the half.
  • The Golden Eagles opened the second half with two quick goals to lessen their deficit to eight, but Reina found the back of the net for her second goal of the game to put the Knights back up by nine. Another Brockport goal on a free position shot signified their resilience, but Ma. Brown responded right back for Geneseo with a free position goal of her own with six minutes left in the third. Another goal by Cook put Geneseo back up by double-digits, but the Golden Eagles kept clawing back and finished out the quarter with another goal.
  • After opening the final quarter with a 15-6 lead, the Knights retook a ten-goal lead as Cook assisted Lila Warner on her second goal of the year nearly seven minutes into the fourth period. Salanger's sixth goal of the game extended Geneseo's lead to eleven with three minutes left to play and a Brockport score in the final minutes wasn't enough to mount a comeback as the Knights came away with a 17-7 victory.
