Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo seniors Hannah Marafioti and Megan Henderson spurred the Knights to a comeback victory over visiting Brockport, beating the 20th-ranked Golden Eagles, 13-11, at College Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore midfielder Emily Salanger opened the scoring as the Knights and Golden Eagles traded early goals. Geneseo jumped ahead, 3-1, but Brockport outscored the Knights, 4-2, through the remainder of the first quarter to tie the game 5-5.
- The Golden Eagles opened the second quarter with three-straight goals, taking an 8-5 lead with 5:56 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Caitlyn Korzeniewski scored with 3:56 to play in the half, triggering a 5-0 run to end the frame. Henderson tallied less than a minute later, followed by Marafioti, who scored three-straight to close the half as the Knights entered the break leading, 10-8.
- In the second half, Brockport scored twice in the first three minutes to tie the game, but Henderson buried a goal with 6:24 to play in the third period to give the Knights an 11-10 advantage.
- Marafioti tallied a free-position shot with 8:13 to play in the fourth quarter and senior Emma Gaenzle added an important insurance goal with 2:55 to play as the Knights salted away the remaining clock to earn a 13-11 victory.
QUICK FACTS
- Marafioti finished with a team-high six points on four goals and two assists, moving to within 12 points of Geneseo all-time leading scorer Caroline Buonocore. Marafioti needs just four more assists to tie the Knights' program record in career assists as well.
- Henderson finished with two goals and a team-high six draw controls while Geneseo captured 17 out of 28 draws throughout the game.
- Defenders Linsday Merenda, Meg Seeley and Isabelle Sarle along with Marafioti and Gaenzle each finished with two caused turnovers while sophomore goalkeeper Emily DeJohn finished with nine saves to preserve the victory.
