Salanger Scores Overtime Game-Winner To Lift Knights Over Montclair St., 12-11

Box Score

MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The SUNY Geneseo women's lacrosse team opened up their spring break trip with a bang as they pulled out an overtime win at Montclair St. on Monday afternoon behind sophomore midfielder Emily Salanger's goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Geneseo jumped out to a hot start offensively as they took a 4-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game. The Knights used a balanced attack with goals from Salanger, Emma Gaenzle, Hannah Marafioti, and Megan Cook.
  • The Red Hawks were able to adjust defensively to slow down Geneseo, but the Knights still took a two-goal into the second half following goals from Molly Brown and Caitlyn Korzeniewski.
  • Montclair made a run of their own in the second half and were able to take the lead for the first time in the game early in the fourth quarter. The Red Hawks continued to have some offensive momentum in the final 15 minutes and they took an 11-10 lead with 2:36 left to play.
  • Geneseo was able to quickly rebound from the Red Hawks goal as Madelynn Brown tied the game back up less than 30 seconds later. Neither team was able to score in the final two minutes of play and the game went to overtime.
  • After April Rowell won the draw control to start overtime, the Knights wasted no time as Marafioti found Salanger for the game-winning goal on the first possession.

QUICK FACTS

  • The Knights offense saw nine different players score a goal in the game, with Gaenzle, Salanger, and Megan Henderson each scoring twice.
  • Marafioti led the team in points with six, as she was able to rack up five assists including the game-winner in overtime.
  • The overtime victory for Geneseo avenges their 2019 double overtime loss at home to the Red Hawks, 14-13.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Knights will head to Connecticut on March 16 to take on Trinity at 6:30 p.m.
